HISTORY AND HERITAGE IT ALL STARTED WITH A VISION
In 1962, six visionaries saw the future of medical care. A group of renowned doctors (namely, Dr. Pacifico Yap, Dr. Victor So Yee Piu, Dr. Go Kiat Su), and a group of top businessmen from Christian Gospel Church (namely (Mr. James Cu, Mr. Amado Lim, and Mr. Lim Kong Gee) envisioned putting up a tertiary level hospital in the heart of downtown Manila.
A MISSION TO PROMOTE CHRISTIANITY
In April 1968, with the two able groups, together called United Doctors Service Corporation, the vision of a Metropolitan Hospital came to life. With a mission to promote Christianity by providing genuinely caring medical services, the hospital was given its Chinese name that translates as “founded in honor and reverence to Christ.” Metropolitan Hospital began its service to the public with a 3-storey 156-bed capacity edifice in Masangkay, Manila equipped with operating rooms, delivery rooms, and nursery. The late Dr. Victor So was the first medical director of the hospital.
1970s – A DECADE OF RAPID GROWTH
The 1970s showed rapid growth for the hospital as seen with its aggressive acquisition of that time’s latest medical equipment – 6 operating X-ray machines, a Hemodialysis machine, an intensive cardiac care unit, and respirator machine. It was in the same decade when the coronary ICU was established (1971). In the mid-70s, a 2-storey building was constructed inside the hospital compound that housed numerous doctors seeking affiliations with the growing hospital. In 1976, the hospital expanded up to the 6th floor with 308 beds in all. Around the same year, the Metropolitan Hospital College of Nursing was born. Hence, the hospital became known for its superior medical care not only throughout the greater Manila area but all over the country.
1980s – CONTINUED ADVANCEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY
To address the growing needs of its clientele, Metropolitan Hospital continued to advance in the 1980s. During this period, the hospital established its satellite pharmacy, department of ultrasound, CT Scan and Computer System, and laser and surgical ICU.
1990s – FURTHER GROWTH IN DEPTH & SCOPE OF SERVICES
In 1995, a new group of investors came in to develop the hospital services further. A 30-room executive suite wing and semi-private wards were made available, as well as state-of-the-art diagnostic center which included Ultrasound, EEG, Colposcopy, Pulmonary, Mammography, and Occupational Therapy. Of course, it was also during this time when Metropolitan Hospital’s GI Endoscopy unit, the first & the best in the country, was established.
