We are looking for a diligent and driven Legal Counsel with an interest in performing a data protection and regulatory compliance role in the music industry. The Legal Counsel will serve as the Society’s Data Protection Officer and assist the General Counsel in ensuring compliance of the Society with all other applicable laws, rules, and regulations. The Legal Counsel may also be called upon to handle dispute resolution and litigation cases as needed.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The Legal Counsel shall be under the supervision of the General Counsel and is expected to perform mainly the following:

(1) Perform duties of a data protection officer, such as, but not limited to:

  • Designing, developing, recommending, implementing, and maintaining data privacy programs, security controls, initiatives, and enhancements aligned with applicable laws, as well as local and international standards;
  • Performing privacy impact assessments, and preparing and submitting reports, notices, and policies as required by applicable data privacy laws and regulations;
  • Monitoring, reviewing, evaluating, and ensuring compliance with data protection laws and regulations, including any registration or accreditation requirements;
  • Reviewing and negotiating data sharing or data transfer agreements, and other contracts or clauses relevant to data protection;
  • Ensuring staff awareness and development in relation to data protection regulations through notices, data privacy trainings, and other initiatives;

(2) monitor, review, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and requirements of accrediting bodies and international associations; prepare and recommend processes and policies to aid compliance; ensure Society's awareness of applicable laws and regulations; and manage conflicts that may arise in relation to data protection and regulatory compliance;

(3) conduct formal administrative labor investigations and address other labor concerns of the Society;

(4) recommend, initiate, and handle the dispute resolution and litigation of copyright infringement, collection, and other cases;

(5) provide legal advice to the Society’s members, as well as the Society’s Board, Committees, and management;

(6) coordinate with other local societies, international affiliate societies, rights management entities, CISAC, and other international bodies; and

(7) coordinate with external counsel, as needed.

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum of at least three (3) years of experience as a data protection officer
  • Has strong and comprehensive knowledge of data protection laws
  • Knowledge of international privacy laws, such as GDPR, is highly preferable
  • Privacy and data protection certification is desirable
  • Experience in a risk management and compliance role is desirable
  • Strong experience in litigation is desirable
  • Qualified to practice law in the Philippines, with either a Bachelor of Laws or J.D.
  • Member in good standing of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, along with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships within the Society and with external partners in the industry
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision
  • Patient, emotionally resilient, and able to work in a fast-paced and high-pressure work environment
  • Demonstrate high professional ethical standards in a diverse workplace
  • Pragmatic, able to multi-task and balance competing priorities.
